K for Kids (Simplify the Story for a Junior)

Once upon a time, there was a boy called Sandy.  His Daddy and his Mummy were very rich and had a lot of money.  Sadly, Sandy's Mummy died, and his Daddy got a bit sick in his head.  He started drinking too much wine and coming home too late.  Sandy went off to live with his Aunty and Uncle and his cousins.  They lived on a farm and it was quite a long way from Auckland, where Sandy lived with his Mummy and Daddy.  He learns how to get the milk out of cows.  Then, he goes to the nearby school, and gets into trouble with his teachers.  At school camp, there is a flood and water goes everywhere and ruins where they are staying.  It is really hard to get back down, some of the girls lost their shoes which made walking hurt for the poor girls, But Sandy, finds his power and saves them, and lets them get down without too many ouchies.

L for Letter to the Editor

Dear Ted Dawe

I have loved your book called And Did Those Feet....  It was just like I was right there, watching Sandy milk cows and do other farm chores.  I like the way it has some humourous parts, but it is not a comedy, it still has a good story.  Ido have one criticism though,  I think the part where Sandy has just arrived at the farm and is talking to his Aunty and Uncle while dinner is being made goes on a bit long, and for me it got a small bit boring, but other than that I thought it was fantastic!

 N for Newspaper Article

I used the headline earlier in this novel study for my newspaper article.

School Camp Turns to Disaster!

Things went horribly wrong for students at a rural school at the bottom of Mt Taranaki last week.  The Year 8 students were going on camp up Mt Taranaki when a massive flood flooded the river they were near to and flooded their campsite, leaving some students

without essential items such as shoes and water canteens.  Some poor girls had to make it down the cold, rocky mountain in bare feet.  Some students broke bones and the entire thing turned to disaster.  Luckily no-one was seriously injured or killed in this awful incident but it

does raise the issue of safety on school camps.  The school will be looking into this disaster and will be taking steps to ensure more safety on future camps.

O for Olden Day Language

NB: Say in an Scottish accent.

'Twas a sad day in ye olde Auckland the day Sandy lost his mother and his dad became a drunk.  Sandy had to go and live with his cousins don't ya know!  'E went to the local school and got into a bit of trouble, me hearties.  Anyway, he went on a school camp to ye olde Mount Taranaki, and got into a different sort of trouble.  A flood made the campsite into a wretched state, don't ya know.  On the way down, a few girlies lost their boots and had to go down with nothing on their feet don't ya know.  Everyone got themselves into a wretched state by the time they got down and you could bet your bottom pound that they were happy to be down.

Q for Questions I would like to ask

  • Will this ever be made into a movie?
  • How old is Sandy?
  • Why did Uncle Frank and Aunty Lorna choose to be poor when Aunty Lorna had her accident?

R for Star Rating

I gave this book a 4 star rating, because it did have a slightly boring part when Sandy first arrives in his cousins house.

U for Unusual Part of the Story

I thought that the most unusual part of the story was the ending.  I didn’t really like the ending because you didn’t see what Sandy was going home to; you just saw that he was going home.  I would have liked to know how his Dad had changed, and whether he had managed to pull himself together or whether Sandy was just going home to the same environment as before.

V for Voice, Who Tells the Story

This story is told from the point of view of Sandy, and is written kind of like a diary.  It uses his language and it also helps to form the character of Sandy in your mind, when it is written as though he is reading it to you.

X for Xciting Part of the Story

My favourite part, the most exciting part was when they were all on school camp and the flood happened overnight.  Sandy woke up and looked at the quiet, peaceful stream that had been there before, only to find it was now a raging river, getting closer to the campsite every minute!  He woke everyone up and at first his teacher didn't believe him, but when the teacher saw it with his own eyes, he quickly raised the alarm and they packed up their stuff and headed down the mountain.  That's where some to the girls lost their boots and things

Y for Y Did You Choose This Novel

I chose this novel because it was one I had read a few years ago, and I couldn't remember any detail but I remembered it as a good book.  It was a good one, because it had some humour, but it wasn't a comedy book.  It is also interesting, even the boring part was interesting, and didn't go on too long.

ZZZZZZ, Boring Part

The part I would describe as the boring part would be the part when Sandy has just arrived at the farm and he is in his aunty and uncle's living room and they are talking.  They are talking about what happened earlier in the book, which makes it boring, because we have already heard it.
