 C for Character Descriptions

Sandy - Sandy is the main character of this story, and also whose perspective this story is told from.  He has black hair and a no. 1 haircut.  He has olive skin and has a very short fuse.  He becomes angry quickly and lashes out if someone teases him or puts him down.  He goes off to live on a farm when he lashes out at someone at his city school.  He comes across as being quite rough, he swears a bit and thinks that the farm is really embarrassing, until he learns to live with it.

Sandy's Dad - You never know Sandy's Dad's real name.  He is just called Dad in this book.  His wife (Sandy's mum) dies and he goes mad.  He starts heavy drinking and never comes home at the time he tells Sandy.  This makes Sandy upset and makes him angry, so that's why Sandy has to move out and go to stay on his Aunt and Uncle's Taranaki farm.

Uncle Frank - Uncle Frank is Sandy's Uncle.  He has a sense of humour which Sandy isn't sure if he likes.  He is Sandy's Dad's brother but Sandy doesn't think they look or act anything alike.

Aunty Lorna - Aunty Lorna is Sandy's Aunty and Uncle Frank's wife.  She and Uncle Frank used to be rich but once when they were in Sydney at a street fair a speeding car came crashing through and ran her over.  She was in hospital for a long time and it made Uncle Frank see that money wasn't everything and they bought a farm instead.  She is very warm and loving.

Noel Cudby - Noel Cudby is the school bully at the country school where Sandy's cousins go and he where goes when he stays with them.  Sandy and Noel get into a big fight and Sandy ends up getting blamed for it because his teacher and principal only saw Sandy hit Noel but not Noel hitting Sandy.  At the end Sandy helps Noel out of danger and then when Sandy is in a life-threatening problem when school camp goes horribly wrong, Noel helps him.  In a funny way they become friends in the end.

D for Diary Entries

Sandy - Today I turned up in this dump of a farm in Taranaki.  They don't have a computer or a TV which is really annoying.  You also have to get up at 5 am to milk the cows.  The people are pretty nice and the food is fantastic.  I haven't had a home cooked dinner in ages.  Dad was a really rubbish cook and we used to always end up having takeaways.  I wonder what Dad is doing.  So far I just want to go back home.

Sandy's Dad - Today I had to send Sandy off to my brother and sister-in-law's house in Taranaki.  We are just in a mess at the moment.  Ever since my wife died I feel I haven't been doing enough for Sandy.  I hope I've done the right thing in sending him away.  It's probably better than living here.

Uncle Frank - Today my nephew Sandy came to stay here with us.  Tomorrow I'm going to show him how to milk the cows just to get him all ready for the rest of the jobs in store for him soon.  He's been living with his Dad (my brother) and his lifestyle is pretty different to ours.  I'm sure I'll be able to make him a proper little farm kid soon.

Aunty Lorna -  Today Sandy came to stay.  He was really tired.  I wonder if it was the bus trip that tired him out or the things he's been going through at home.  I hope we can cheer him up a bit here.  I'm not sure how he'll take becoming a farm boy though.  I don't think it will be as easy as Frank thinks.

Noel Cudby - Let's get one thing straight.  I hate keeping a diary.  If it wasn't because I was forced to then I wouldn't be doing it now.  Today I heard another cultie might be coming soon.  I hope he'll be better than the other ones here.  I hear he comes from Auckland, A city kid might be nice here, or not.

E for Event (Main Event in the Story)

One of the main events in the story is the School Camp.  It teaches Sandy about his own strengths and shows him that some people who are bad aren't really that bad after all.  Sandy and his class go on a camp up a mountain.  They get up as far as they are going to go and then go to bed near a stream.  Sandy wakes up in the middle of the night because he can hear heavy rain on the top of his tent and the stream next to them is sounding a lot louder than usual.  He pokes his head out and sees that the stream is not longer a stream.  It has turned into a big river, and he goes around and wakes everyone up.  They quickly pack up their stuff and head down the now very slippery path back down to the ground.  A couple of the girls lost their boots and on the way down were screaming.  Eventually they got back down but by the time they did no-one was happy anymore.

G for Gripping Part of Novel

The most gripping part of this novel was the school camp disaster I described in the main events part of my Novel Study.  I couldn't put the book down when I was reading the part where the stream turned into a river and flooded.  That part of the book is my favourite.

H for Headline

A Newspaper Headline about something that happens in my book is "School Camp Turns To Disaster!".

I for I Recommend This Novel Because...

I recommend this novel because it is a New Zealand book by a New Zealand author and set mainly in a Taranaki farm in New Zealand.  I like the way it is funny in some parts, but it is  not a comedy book.  It still has a good story.  I would recommend this novel to someone who was 11-13 and a boy.
